The origins of Mother's Day go back to ancient times. The Greeks celebrated Rhea, the mother of the gods, and the Romans paid tribute to the mothers of their families during festivals called "Matralia". These days were celebrated during spring, the month of fertility. The dates vary from country to country, but in all but a few countries this tribute is usually in May or June.

In France, Mother's Day was officially established after the Second World War by Vincent Auriol, President of the Republic, with the law of 24 May 1950.

This year, it will be celebrated in France on Sunday 4 June 2023.
